Branded vs. Non-Branded Search: Is Your SEO Working?

Being #1 on your name isn't SEO performance, it's just Google being polite. Here's how to assess your true visibility, with 2026 data.

💡 TL;DR If you open Google Search Console and see “we are #1”, take a closer look: #1 on what? For most startup sites, that #1 position is simply their own brand name, the easiest query to win on the entire internet. The real SEO score is when someone searches for the problem you solve, not your business name.

At Be To Solutions, before even touching on a redesign, we first check this distribution: brand vs. non-brand visibility. It takes five minutes, and it says more about the real reach of your site than any “we rank well” report.

What “branded search” vs. “off-brand search” really means

A brand search contains the name of your company or product: someone typing “Acme Inc” because they already know you. A off-brand search is generic, like “startup timeshare CTO” or “why is my site slow,” typed by someone who has never heard of you.

Being #1 on your brand name is not a skill. No one else is fighting for this request. Positioning yourself on the off-brand terms that your future customers actually type is the part that makes a business grow, and it's the part that almost no one checks.

Comparison table: what each type of positioning really proves

Signal

What it measures

What it really proves

What to do

#1 on the brand

Someone already knows you and has been looking for you

Your business exists and is indexed, nothing more

Not much to do, this rank is almost acquired

Page 1 off brand

A stranger looking for his problem finds you

Real and growing reach, beyond your existing network

Continue to build topic authority around this query

Page 3+ off brand / not indexed

A stranger looking for his problem can't find you

A structural or technical problem, not a lack of content

First audit the content structure, internal linking and crawlability

According to the analysis of 332 million Google queries conducted by SparkToro in 2024, branded queries account for approximately 44% of all Google searches, and non-branded queries make up the remaining 56%, which means that the majority of real search demand is precisely where most startup sites never appear.

Why founders are missing out

Three reasons, and none of them have anything to do with SEO competence:

  1. The dashboard looks good. A “ranking #1” line in a report reads as success, whether that ranking comes from the easiest query on the web or the hardest.

  2. Off-brand visibility is invisible until you go looking for it. No one checks it by chance, you have to deliberately look for the statement of your own problem to realize that you are not there.

  3. Reworks fix what can be seen. A new layout, new colors, new text: so many visible improvements. Crawlability and indexing issues are invisible, so they fall by the wayside even during a complete redesign.

What is usually behind this gap

Not a lack of content, but a lack of structure usable by Google:

  • Most pages never get any organic traffic. Ahrefs' study of approximately 14 billion pages found that 96.55% of them get no organic search traffic from Google, largely because they are built around the business, not around a real researched question.

  • Crawl budget is wasted before reaching your best content. Sector benchmarks compiled by Colorlib for 2026 estimate that the average site wastes 25 to 30% of its crawl budget on duplicate, poor or orphan pages, and that 42% of pages contain broken internal or external links, two signals that quietly tell Google to stop crawling the site further.

  • Core Web Vitals remain an industry-wide crapshoot. End of 2025, alone 54.6% of websites met Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds (Chrome UX Report, 2025, via SE Ranking), a technical layer that determines whether new, off-brand pages are even crawled and ranked.

  • Position still determines almost everything. The first organic result was approximately 10 times more likely to be clicked than a result in position 10 (Backlinko, 2025), so even off-brand pages indexed but located on page 2 are, in fact, invisible.

How to check this yourself in 5 minutes

  1. Search for your brand name. Note the result (almost certainly #1).

  2. Look for 2-3 phrases that a stranger would type to describe their problem, not the name of your product.

  3. Note where you appear: page 1, page 3, or nowhere.

  4. Open Search Console and filter queries that don't contain your brand. This number, not your overall “impressions,” is your actual reach.

FAQ: On-brand vs. off-brand search

If I'm #1 on my brand name, that means my SEO is working, right?

No. Branded search has almost no competition, it mostly reflects that your business exists and is indexed, not that your SEO strategy is effective.

It's just a content issue, should I publish more articles?

Not necessarily. If pages aren't crawled effectively or contain broken internal links, more content won't address the underlying viewability gap. Structure and crawlability come first.

How do I know if this applies to my site?

Take the 5 minute test above. If there's a big gap between your brand positioning and your off-brand visibility, this applies to you.

Does a redesign fix this problem automatically?

Not on her own. A redesign changes what visitors see, it doesn't automatically fix wasted crawl budget, broken internal links, or missing off-brand content. These points must be addressed directly.

Our agency opinion

On the audits we carry out, the pattern is almost always the same: a site which appears perfectly correct to a human, #1 on its own name, and impossible to find on the real language that its future clients use. Nobody built it to fail, it was just never verified on off-brand queries in the first place. Discover our digital audit approach.

Our recommendation: before briefing a redesign, do the 5-minute test above. It tells you if the real problem is the appearance of the site, or if it is simply not found. These are two very different projects.

In summary

Being #1 on your own name is the bare minimum, not a victory. The number that really matters is off-brand visibility: the ability of people who have never heard of you to find you before turning to a competitor.
